Catch-up Blog

La Feria, TX  78º   Partly cloudy with 30% chance of showers predicted -- that was true overnight and it didn't come true.  (28º in our hometown of Clarinda, IA)

Went to Walmart in Weslaco Friday with file for the photo at left and am having a 16" x 20" of this made up to put in the back room at the Rec Hall.  It is our group that met in State Center, IA this last August for several days.

Will put in some more pictures of Thanksgiving dinner at the Rec Hall.  These were borrowed from Pam Pattan.

Phyllis & Lynn Miles, getting ready to serve.
Lynn directing where the wheeled cart with roaster full of turkey should go out of the kitchen to the serving tables.
Lynn & Jim Cleveland wait with the cart while Harold Patton puts one of the wheels back on the cart.  Didn't tip or lose any turkey!
Ruth Siegfried doing some stirring/checking before food taken out to serving tables.

Rinsing some dishes after eating.

Some palm tree decoration on some banana desert.  This dish was originally set down at a quarter turn counter-clockwise and some guys thought it was obscene.   They didn't see the palm trees!

At a little after 5 am Friday we were at Lowe's in Weslaco to get a 10" Skil compound miter saw and a shop vac.  There were several people, but not a maddening crowd for "Black Friday" sales.  With our saw loaded we went on to get a shop vac and some other items for our Texas house.

After being a Lowe's we stopped at Walmart in Weslacoto leave the file for our Kenwood 2012 Summer Rally poster and found long lines waiting to get into the electronics/TV area.

Lots of "corral" panels up blocking off areas.  We found that Walmart had their big "Black Friday" sale Thursday evening from 8 PM to 10 PM and they did have huge crowds then.  Guess lots of TV's were sold.

We stopped at Whataburger and had biscuits and gravy for breakfast.  We were back to Kenwood in time to go to our daily (5 times a week) 8:00 am exercise class.  Decided that our routine of eating breakfast after exercise is a better thing, even though the exercises are not strenuous it made things tougher on a full stomach.

Saturday found me setting up the saw and then working on the new wall to hold the third side of the new shower.

I used my new Kreg pocket hole drill to fashion these 2" x 4" pieces to brace the wall against the existing wall.

New wall in place, but not braced to vertical position.

Sunday morning we rode with Bob & Bobbi Raab to the Methodist Church service at 9:00 am and afterwards ate at the Mexican Restaurant at the south end of La Feria.

In the evening we went up to the Rec Hall for announcements, ice-cream, and some dominoes.  In photo at right Morris Azure is doing the announcements.  This was his first activity after returning from the hospital with some stints implanted after a bit of a heart problem.  Was good to see him.

Phyllis cleaned up my storage shed and organized things.  Of course, I can't find anything now, but thought should show pictures before I get things back to a normal state of mess.

Did the wood filling, sanding on the wood around and below the new shower and Phyllis is currently slapping some paint on it.  I will put the wall back on behind the shower (in our bedroom) where had put in the plumbing and we should be finished with that project.  I am going to get up on ladder by the carport this afternoon and clean off accumulation of tree stuff (seed, small leaves, etc.).

Till later, Lynn

Turkey Day

La Feria, TX  82 degrees, partly cloudy, breezy.

Thanksgiving noon meal at the Rec Hall.  Many people turned out.
Two serving lines were set up, in the hall itself, and things went smoothly.

We did have quite a lot of turkey, potatoes, gravy and dressing left over (provided by Kenwood) and that was frozen for later.
Doug Tyndall made announcements and said grace.

Ron Siegfried, left, and helpers cooked the turkey, potatoes, dressing and grave.  Bob Raab, right, was one of the servers.
Dave and Jan Engle, and her folks, Ralph & Jean Snyder, had Oreo Turkeys.

2:30 pm, back to the house, in the recliner, and giving the body a chance to digest the great dinner.

More later, Lynn
