In Rio Grande Valley of Texas

La Feria, TX - 83º with predicted low tonight of 67º

Toured the capitol of Texas yesterday morning and then hooked on to the trailer about 11:30 am and headed south.  Got in to Kenwood just at dark.  Slept in the trailer and have spent most of today opening the house (all windows have insulation between inner and outer windows) and moving the stuff from trailer and Ford.  Started to put wheels back on trikes; went to Post Office to resume delivery of mail here.  Had had it held up for last 2 weeks, but there was one letter already in mailbox here.  Is a but muggy and without electricity in our mobile home now way to cool it today.  I had forgotten to notify the electric company to turn the juice back on (usually call a week or so before we get here, but completely forgot this year).  They are scheduled to turn it on today, but haven't seen them so far.  When gets dark will probably move back to trailer and run generator for the evening.
Will have internet hooked up at our house tomorrow and, if we get electricity, will be able to get on there.  Am at Rec Hall now.

Will get photos more up to date and do some posting on them.

Austin, TX

Got in to Austin about 5:00 pm.  Lots of traffic, but are in a really nice RV Park (Passport America).  Have unhitched and will go on guided tour of Capitol in the morning before heading on south.

This morning we left Grand Prairie and stopped in Burleson, TX (about 30 miles) and had breakfast at a really nice restaurant "Our Place" with Nancy and Dale Carver.  Was about noon when we quit our visit and headed down I 35.  Terrific weather, but a little windy for pulling the trailer.  Computer showed averaging only about 9 mpg with the 20-30 mph head and crosswind.

More tomorrow.

Great weather in Texas

Grand Prairie, TX  Bright sunshine and 70 degrees and predicted high of 89º

Not planning on leaving the trailer today, other than walk a few hundred feet to Traders Village and walk through hundreds of booths.

At right is the ticket to get in to the Museum at the Book Warehouse from which Oswald shot President Kennedy in 1963.  It was a very interesting hour or so at the museum.  They did not allow any photos on the 6th  floor, though was able to take some on 7th floor.
This is taken from window directly above the window Oswald shot through, looking down at scene where the Presidential parade went.  Trees have grown up in the last 50 years; but, Kennedy's car would have been about where the cluster of leaves are directly in center of road.

A couple of "X"s are painted on the street showing where first shot hit muffler of the car  and where car was located when head-shot was made.  We saw one young girl about get run over on this street as she repeatedly ran out to stand on the X and had to dash out of the way of moving traffic several times.

This is the "grassy knoll" -- looking back up the street.  Book Warehouse would be to left and high up out of photo.

This was the front entrance of the Book Warehouse in 1963.  It is not used now.

Photo of our trailer at Traders Village RV -- beyond the fence is the small airport; lots of small planes and helicopters using it.

Least expensive diesel  ($3.26) we have bought on this trip.  Seen prices as high as $3.89 -- here in Dallas area we filled up at $3.35 but many stations are at $3.49.

This is photo of the Oklahoma State Capitol.  There are operating oil wells running on the State Capitol grounds.  It took close to 90 years, but Oklahoma finally completed its state capitol dome in the fall of 2002-95 years after the state entered the union.  The dome was added that year.

Photo on wall of the capitol showing the building up until 2002 -- without the dome.
With diverse number of Native American Tribes in Oklahoma  -- Click Here for maps & languages

there are many statues and art work to them.

The museum provided (included in the $12 each we paid) headsets and I-Pad type devices that gave much explanations of the some 50 boards with photos and notes.  We took about an hour and a half walking through it.
After getting out we went on a Dallas City Tour on this Trolly.

It was about an hour & a quarter and gave a lot of history and descriptions of the many buildings.

Pioneer Plaza Cattle Drive   Click that site to see website of where our tour ended.  These huge bronze long-horns represent a cattle drive back when many cattle were herded north.

This photo is from the web-site.

Phyllis was brave enough to stand behind this big long-horn.

Saturday morning we drove the 30-some miles north to Frisco and visited with Frank Luther -- a square dance friend from Clarinda.   He took us to lunch at the local Applebee's.

Frank has quite a house in a real nice neighborhood.

Nancy Hughes Carver, a childhood friend of Phyllis' was at her daughter's place in nearby Carrollton, TX and Frank drove us over there for a nice visit.  At right is Nancy and her husband Dale.

Phyllis & Nancy visiting.  Nancy lives south of where we are camping now and we will stop by their house on the way out of Dallas in the morning.

We have walked over to the Trader's Village and I was able to buy a Ryobi Model # P887 One Plus 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Combo Kit (5-Tool) for $100.  Found it listed on internet at Home Depot for $249.

To walk back over to their after we eat a bite here at the trailer.  Have dumped the black and grey tanks of the trailer and ready to hook up first thing in the morning and head to Burleson, Texas in the morning to visit a bit more with Nancy and Dale.

We have taken just under 800 photos since leaving home and I have them on my Picasa page:
Lynn's Picasa "2014 to Texas" Click on that link to see any of the pictures we have taken since leaving Clarinda for Kenwood.  I have not edited, rotated, deleted or labeled many of them yet, but will work on them as able.  Check back whenever you like.

Grand Prairie, Texas at Trader Village

Saturday evening.  Been busy couple days.  Have World Series on as I start this at 9:44 pm.
Yesterday morning we drove to Dallas and spent time in the Texas School Book Depository   Click on that to go to web site.  A bit tired - will write more tomorrow.  We did city tour on the Dallas Trolly yesterday after the Texas School Book Depository museum.  Today we drove to Frisco, Texas (about 30 miles north of here) and spent much of the day with Frank Luther who lives there and also has a house in Clarinda.  We all had lunch and then drove over to a childhood friend of Phyllis' Nancy Hughes Carver who was visiting her kids and Grand kids in nearby Carrollton, TX.  Back to the trailer about 5:30 pm.  Our friends Noni and Leonard Lund arrived with their 5th wheel just as we returned.  We have decided to stay another night here -- looking through the huge trade/flea market here at Traders Village tomorrow and pull out Monday morning, stopping at Nancy's house in Burleson, Texas and then will go on to Austin.  Have an RV park spotted just south of Austin.  Will do capitol tour either Monday afternoon late or early Tuesday morning.  Will be in Kenwood probably after lunch on Wednesday.

More later, Lynn

Dallas, Texas

We are in Grand Prairie, Texas (Between Dallas & Fort Worth) at Traders Village.  Temperature is to get to 88º today and tomorrow is predicted to be 90º which will set a record high for that date.

After touring the Kansas State Capitol we drove to near Tescott, Kansas to Bill & Kathy Conally's place.  After setting the trailer Bill had Leonard Lund and myself get on his 4-wheeler and go check his cattle.  He fall-calves and is about half way done.

Quigley, the dog, rode in the back.

Bill calves both fall and spring, having similar sized herd for spring.

After checking the cows/calves Bill put out some feed for the bull.

He heard the feed being dumped and promptly came up.

After returning from the pasture we ate supper.  At right is Phyllis with Noni Lund (From near Sioux City, IA)

Kathy and Bill Conally
Then we got in to Pegs & Jokers while watching the Royals getting beaten in the first game of the 2014 World Series.  Above is Leonard Lund and Phyllis.

Getting short time now and I must leave the computer to go to the 6th Floor Book Warehouse Museum in Dallas.  Will catch up on this later.  We got in this RV Park after dark last night and spent some time getting in to a really small place.  However, it is still the same side in our trailer!  And, even though it is tight one side is on the street so have unlimited view that way -- across the street is a small airport.

More later, Lynn

On the Road Again!!!!!!

Guthrie, Oklahoma - 67º and rain very near.

We pulled out of Clarinda, with our travel trailer, around noon on Sunday the 19th of October, heading for our winter home in La Feria, Texas.  Stopped in Maryville, MO and ate a sandwich at Jimmy Johns.  Arrived at farm home of Harold and LaRhoda Neher just east of Hiawatha, KS a little after 2 pm.  I have these photos a little out of order.  On Monday morning I went with Harold and rode with him in the combine as he ran some soybeans.  Here he is riding up the lift he had a blacksmith make for him so he could make it up to the cab.

With his leg health problems, this 87 year old man can still make it in to the combine cab and once there the controls for everything, while he is seated, keeps things running.

His right hand on the joy stick with numerous controls on it, and a pad immediately to his right keeps everything where he wants it.  The computer screen to his right monitors just about everything--conditions of everything about the engine, the moisture of the beans running through, the approximate bushels per acre, the amount of beans in the bin, and on, and on.
In this photo Harold's son Tim was driving the tractor pulling the grain cart.  It is unbelievable, but this cart holds enough to fill an entire semi-truck.

On Sunday evening we went with Harold and LaRhoda to their church for a fish fry-pot luck supper celebrating successful fundraiser just put on and also was an appreciation supper for their pastor and his wife.
Back at the Neher's we worked on several games of Pegs & Jokers.

Monday morning LaRhoda insisted on feeding us a "thresher-man's breakfast.

One final photo of the entire combine that Harold and Tim work with.

We made it back to Harold's in time for lunch and Burl and Donna Penny from nearby Troy, Kansas were there and had brought with them Beverly and Gordon Mayer from Reno, Nevada.  Bev & Gordy had just arrived in the motor home at the Penny's.  All of these people spend their winters in the RV Parks in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.  Burl is the shiny-headed guy to the left with LaRhoda and Beverly
From left to right -- Beverly Mayor, Gordon Mayer and Donna Penny.

Harold is seated, ready to eat!

The Pegs & Jokers were out again and we went at it.

We all helped clean up, a little, one of the apple trees for the Nehers.

Tuesday morning we pulled out - Harold, LaRhoda and Rocky (the dog) watch us leave.

We got to the State Capitol in Topeka in time to take the 11 am guided tour.  They just recently finished a $325 Million renovation of the capitol.

Think this was over a 13 year period.  It is amazing the work they did.  All the inside copper was polished -- it was black and most people assumed it was painted wood.

Click here for details on renovation

Dome from 1st floor.
One of the many murals.  My understanding is many of the murals and all the patterns on ceilings and walls were painted over many years ago.  There were as many as 6 coats of paint removed from many murals and decorative patterns and put back as original.  You have to see them all to appreciate them.

After the Capitol tour we ate in a Gaelic Pub near the Capitol and then drove to near Tescott, Kansas to farm home of Bill and Kathy Connally.  Leonard and Noni Lund had just arrived in their brand new 5th wheel from near Sioux City, Iowa.  Connally's have been in our Kenwood RV Park for several years and Lunds were several years ago.  Lunds were going to be at Connally's most of this week.  Leonard and I road with Bill in his 4-wheeler to check his fall calving cows.  I am not getting the pictures where I can upload them right now.  After a great quickly-put-together supper we sat down for 5 or 6 games of Pegs & Jokers while keeping an eye on the World Series game where KC
lost 7-1.

We are now near Guthrie, Oklahoma in a commercial RV Park (where have good WIFI) and watching the 2nd game of World Series.  Light rain started outside.

More later as I get a chance.
