Cool and windy in the Valley

La Feria, TX - 61º with gusty winds.  Feels pretty cool after a calm and 80º day yesterday

A week or so ago I started working on putting an 18 foot extension onto the north end of our carport awning.  Here are the 14' long steel legs that I was getting ready to cut shorter

With my back aching a little, I found I could move the 60 pound bags of Sackrete from the car to the back area easier by using the recumbent trike as a wheel-barrow.

One pole set and am trying to determine level so can cut the second pole to get right height.

Laying out one of the roof sheets to see how it fit on the ground before having to experiment int he air.

Putting in the Sackrete.

This photo taken before the one above, hadn't yet put the pole in the hole. By using a post-hole digger and alternately digging and soaking with water, I dug all four holes two and a half feet deep over period of a couple days.

Sides of the outer frame being held in place on the top of the poles by temporary clamps.

Now that the trailer to the west has been pulled out a full view can be seen of the west side of our trailer.  Shows the awning being put over the current storage shed.  Will remove the shed later, probably this fall when we return.

Shot from near the fence at the north edge of the park, behind our unit.

At 4 pm Meet & Greet last week some of the people came in costume.

Played Pegs & Jokers at Bob & Bobbie Raab's last week one night.  This is Bob's daughter and friend who were visiting from Minnesota.  They are heading back to the cold already.

Phyllis and Lyle Winter seated, with Doris almost seated.

Yesterday we drove to Pharr, TX and visited briefly with Phyllis' aunt Eva who is in a nursing home there and then went on to Paradise South RV for their weekly Jam.  They sell lunch - Brats, Burgers, or Hotdogs - and then we enjoyed the jam from 12:30 pm to around 3:30 pm.  They have a very nice, large
Rec Hall and good stage.  In the center photo at right, they held the flag as we sang God Bless America at the close of the Jam.  Holding the end of the flag is Jerry Davis from Bedford, IA.  He did the Emceeing of the Jam.

In picture at right, near center, is Jim McAlpin from New Market, IA, playing the Saxophone.

After the Jam we rode our Recumbent Trikes around the park.  They told us there are near 700 permanent units, with space for maybe 15-20 in and out RV's.

They have really nice wide streets.  Guess the park was built just 11 or 12 years ago.

About 4:30 pm, after our riding the recumbent trikes for a while, we went with Jim and Lauveda (at the left of photo at right) and Jerry Davis
and his wife Judy, sitting next to Phyllis (in photo at right) to a little local hamburger joint for a nice supper and some visiting before heading back to Kenwood.

Well, is up to 63 degrees, but the wind is cutting.  May get to work some on the carport roof, may wait for more pleasant time.

Phyllis is working at the Rec Hall with the Sew & Share group and we will be heading up to the Rec Hall for Meet and Greet as well as Bean Bag Baseball this evening.

Here are some of the park friends telling Charles and Terri Servin goodby.  They pulled out this morning heading for central Illinois.  There is snow up there, folks, but they needed to get home.

More later, Lynn

Very interesting tour at Rancho El Charco

On Monday we went to Rancho El Charco near La Joya, TX for a very interesting tour of an area unchanged from hundred years ago where we saw much natural Texas wildlife.

Click here to see Rancho El Charco web site.

Swinging foot bridge several of us went across -- a challenge with the rope so low.

Turtles

Goats, goats, goats.

Showing turtle and explaining the life of them.

Lots of goats, and one blue healer dog in large pen.  Dog had been saved when young on goat milk and remains with them as the "alpha goat".

A fox in one of the large cages

We experienced some 10 minutes or so of very loud rotary blades from this Border Patrol helicopter circling the area very low over the mesquite area and one uniformed Border Patrol Agent came walking through our area carrying rifle. At least 3 Border Patrol Cars were driving through the area.  Guide said in her 5 years guiding groups this was the first time she recalled the Border Patrol searching over their ranch.
