Bismarck, North Dakota

We stumble into the most interesting things.  An ad in our Good Sams Club directory led us to the musical at Medora, ND.

We went to this outdoor production Wednesday night just as soon as we unhooked from the trailer and it was real good.  They said the amphitheater sat 2800 and it looked to us to be at least half full.  Pretty good for a town with 112 population.

Had not realized we were right beside Theodore Roosevelt National park  and so on Friday morning we drove the 39 mile loop through this North Dakota Badlands park.  Saw wild horses, bison, lots of ground hogs, and some deer or antelope.

We passed this 40 foot tall cow on the south side of I 94 on way to Bismarck.

We have been doing tours of all the state capitols where we have traveled this summer.............except the North Dakota State Capitol in Bismarck is closed while they do remodeling........bummer!

Back to Medora for a minute.  Found they had moved Theodore Roosevelt's cabin from his ranch to near the Visitors center.  He bought two ranches there, though sold one in a few years.  He spent time at his ranch even while he was President.

As I said, we stumble on to more interesting things!
Today we went to Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park near Mandan, ND and found that this is where General Custer was stationed when he went west to Little Big Horn.  His wife was notified some 10 days after the battle of his death with no Facebook or Twitter available at the time.  It was a very interesting tour of this very egomaniac's home.  We had just toured the battle ground at Little Big Horn a few days ago and heard how he had charged forward in his idiotic way, thinking he was so much better than the Indians.  Shame that his and the 600 soldiers with him were so mourned and much retaliation was made since something over 6 million Indians were reported killed by the white men in the 1700's and 1800's.

We rode the bikes some 4 1/3 miles and could tell that it had been quite a few weeks since we had ridden.  Hard to imagine we are too busy, but guess that is the reason.

We are heading north some 40 miles tomorrow to look around Lewis & Clark's winter headquarters of 1804-1805.

Have a real good KOA Park here with swimming pool.  Intend to try that out after bit.

Have put up photos from Madera to Bismark (will need further work on them, but they are here)  Click HERE
